Glycolic acid is 2-hydroxyethanoic acid that is produced either through a biochemical enzymatic reaction or by chemical synthesis using chloroacetic acid. GAP is an important metabolite of the photorespiratory carbon oxidation cycle (C 2 cycle) of higher plants.
